3 Sofa details to avoid

Now, before I get started, I know what you’re thinking.. Here comes a snobbish post about why you should ONLY buy stylish and expensive sofas and I am here to tell you Sista that is not the case at all! I truly believe that everyone can create an affordable beautiful home; so if you stick with me to the end of this post I’ll share with you my 5 favorite (and affordable) tufted sofas!

Your sofa is an investment piece so save up to spend the extra dollars on quality fabric. Overstuffed sofas scream HEY LOOK AT ME, I’M TUFTED AND COMFORTABLE! When you focus on quality you don’t have buy a sofa that is trying to appear stylish.

My Fast 5 Shopping Tips

  1. Before you fall in love with a sofa, measure the desired space in your home where the sofa will “live”. It also does not hurt to measure your doorway as well. Keep these measurements close by as you shop.

  2. Seat cushions should be comfortable and firm. Test-drive the sofa by lounging in various positions. Cushions should fit snugly in place otherwise the edges may start to become distorted and they will begin to also lose their shape quickly.

  3. Depending on how tall you are, select either shallow or deep seats. If you are tall, you will want to go for a deeper seat.

  4. The filling in your cushions really matters! High-resilient foam is slightly more expensive but it does last longer and is more comfortable. Goose and duck feather fillings are another more expensive yet comfy option. The only downside is that goose feathers can get clumpy. A more affordable option and easy-care option are cushions filled with polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is a low-cost, easy-care cushion filling, but it will eventually flatten over time. These are all the most popular cushion options. You don’t ever want to purchase a sofa with either polyester or a down-polyfiber blend as they are the cheapest options and flatten the fastest.

  5. The last tip is, to pat the back center of the sofa from behind to ensure that it is not hollow.

I hope this helps you on your hunt for a new sofa! Good luck and please leave a comment and share your best sofa buying tip!!
